Actress and prominent activist Ashley Judd sat down with Ladies’ Home Journal recently and dished about the state of her relationship with estranged husband Dario Franchitti, her latest movie, Divergent, and what she would do if confronted with her teenage self. Below are some excerpts from Judd’s interview, the full version of which can be found in the April 2014 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal, on newsstands now.

On her new movie, Divergent: “It’s based on the teen books about a society that divides humanity into factions. I play a woman who doesn’t fit with the group she was born into. The film is really about the greatest fundamental human longing, which is to belong. But it’s also about that opposing desire to be an individual. That’s a profound tension I can certainly relate to.”

On her estranged husband, Dario Franchitti: “He’ll always be my loved one. Even before our wedding we agreed not to tell people about our relationship, but to show them instead. What we’re showing them now is we’re human, we’re family and this is what family looks like.”

On her dislike of Photoshop: “It distorts images of women. Trees turn colors and lose their leaves. That’s what they’re supposed to do, just like women are supposed to have their own seasons of life.”

On what would happen if she came face-to-face with her teenage self: “I’d hold her! Adolescence was exceedingly difficult for me…Only when I got into therapy and started to understand what neglect looked like was I able to ask, Where were the teachers? Where was everybody?”

On the kind of old lady she wants to be: “Joyful. A feminist committed to social justice. A homebody. A Kentucky basketball fan. But mostly, a woman who has her priorities in order.”
