Say what you will about Angelina Jolie and her weird poses at the Oscars, but you can’t deny the humanitarian side of her.

The actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador made time to attend the sentencing of Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga at the International Criminal Court on Wednesday.

Lubanga was convicted of kidnapping and recruiting young children and forcing them to become child soldiers to fight for Congolese rebels. The conviction is the first in the court’s 10-year history and sets a legal landmark in the fight against impunity for the world’s most serious crimes.

Angelina said in a statement: “This is their day. Where these children will feel there is no impunity for what happened to them, for what they suffered.”
