Haley Reinhart Channels A Bit Of Led Zeppelin

Haley Reinhart picked Led Zeppelin’s What Is and What Should Never Be as her first song of the night, a choice that American Idol mentor of the week, Beyoncé, thought was “interesting.”

Haley was joined by her dad on guitar Wednesday night (5/18). She proved she is now a force to be reckoned with, and remained poised and unphased even when she fell during her first song.

Randy Jackson: “This is what it’s all about! I love the fact that now in this moment when you need to be great, this girl is slammin’. You are fearless, you chose a song that is not for the weak at heart. This is crazy vocals and one of your best performances ever. Crazy, crazy.”
Steven Tyler: “Haley, did you fall for me? It’s not how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get back up. That was superb.”
Jennifer Lopez: “You keep going. That’s the sign of a professional. It was a tough song and you sang it really really great.”
The judges picked Haley as having won the first round. Watch her first song performance:

She did not impress the judges as much on her second song, Rihannon” by Fleetwood Mac, chosen for her by Jimmy Iovine. Jackson called it somber even though he thought her pitch was perfect throughout the whole song. Tyler said “You sang that song so beautifully, I remembered why I fell in love with Stevie Nicks in the first place.” Lopez, said the camerawork did Haley well and thought she could have taken the song a bit further at the end, but called it “beautiful” nonetheless. Watch for yourself:
Haley’s last song of the night was Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know. Jackson said, “America’s got their work cut out for them, because I don’t know, those were some amazing choruses. I love seeing you rock out like that in a soulful way.” Tyler said, “Amazing, that was so perfect. You so nailed the choruses. Beautiful.” J.Lo said, “There is no one that can match you there as far as how high you can go and how much power you can put behind your growling.” Watch the performance for yourself:

Scotty McCreery Makes A Country Music Lover Out Of Me..And You?

Someone give Scotty McCreery a contract already because this seasoned crooner is already way too ready to become a country singing superstar.

On Wednesday’s (5/18) American Idol, Scotty sang the life out of Lonestar’s Amazed as his first song of the night. And then he blew me away with his rendition of Kenny Rogers’ She Believes In Me. Scotty, I believe in you and you are making a country music lover out of me!

Here are the judges’ comments to his first performance:

Steven Tyler: “I just think you get better and better with your melody and your singing. I saw you get angry in the middle of that song, that’s what I have been waiting for. That’s really beautiful. You really did take that song up a notch.”

Jennifer Lopez: “It’s great to see you over the weeks…and how much you have grown. I’m sure there are a million girls out there wishing you were singing that song to them.”

Randy Jackson: “It was a great song choice for you. You know who you are and where your lane is. You put a period at the end of that song. You looked into that camera, that’s money!”

Watch Amazed for yourself:

For his second song, chosen by Jimmy Iovine, Scotty sang Thompson Square’s Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not? Tyler was all smiles! “I never heard you deliver a chorus like that before, you were singing those words, ‘are you gonna kiss me or not?’Beautiful, real character showing through.” Lopez said the performance was full of little moments that she loves so much and showed the audience the singer’s personality. She then asked him to shave his head next week so he can look the way he did in auditions. Jackson said, “It was really perfect, right in your range,” and then compared him to Garth Brooks. Jackson and Lopez called the second round for Scotty!

For his third song, he nailed one of my favorites, She Believes In Me by Kenny Rogers – the song  chosen by the judges for him. Tyler said, “I do believe that’s the first big chorus you’ve sang,. You put it over the top for me. That was it right there.” Lopez said, “We chose that song because we all wanted to know if you could hit that big chorus, I guess you showed us!” Jackson agreed, “It’s about you stretching yourself at this point…seeing you believe you could hit those notes, you were so sweet and tender in the front. You hit the chorus. Very nicely done.”

Video: Scotty McCreery Is “Ready For Super Stardom”

Scotty McCreery rendered a beautiful, moving and pitch perfect performance of Alan Jackson’s Where Were You? on May 11th’s American Idol.

Listen, I am not a connoisseur of conutry music by any means, but I know a damn good heartfelt performance when I see and hear one, and Scotty, you killed it for me!

The Idol judges agree:

Randy Jackson: “Dude, I think it’s the perfect song choice for where we are as a country. I applaud you for that. You set your mark on this stage this season. You are ready for super stardom and I hope you make it.”

Steven Tyler: “That was beautiful. I ditto what Randy said. Passion…that’s really important. I see it in your eyes.”

Jennifer Lopez: “I’m just in love with you. I can’t help it. What you stand for, what you bring to your music. I can tell you know who you are. I can tell you know what touches other people. It’s the mark of someone who is meant to do this. And I’m glad we’re here to witness it.”

For his second song, he sang a more up-tempo fun song by The Coasters Young Blood. Tyler said it best, “You made Gaga’s yaya go lala. How could you do that?” HUH?

SHOCKING VIDEO: James Durbin Voted Off American Idol

On last night’s American Idol (May 12) results show, we got another shocker! James Durbin, the tender-hearted rocker expected by most to make it the finale, was voted off of the show after 72 million votes were cast (record voting ever for a Top 4 show).

It came down to Durbin and Scotty McCreery as the last two contestants standing together to learn their fate. But when it was all over, it was Durbin who was voted off and eliminated.

Right after the results show, I ran into McCreery who could not have been more thankful for your votes. He was on his way to have dinner with his family and fellow Idol, Lauren Alaina.

Watch the nail biter results for yourself below. And then, watch my red carpet interview with Pia Toscano to hear her thoughts on the shocking ouster. She could not name “James Durbin” specifically when discussing the “results” because the show had not yet aired on the west coast.

Video: Lauren Alaina Proves Why She Belongs In The Idol Top 4

On the May 11th episode of American Idol, Lauren Alaina was sweet and composed on her first performance of Anyway by Martina McBride, dedicated to the people from the “south recovering from the devastating tornadoes last week.”

The judges melted…

Steven Tyler: “Lauren you did it again. You broke my heart. That was the most beautiful thing. Your voice is so pure and perfect and right on pitch. You deliver a song like a blue plate special. You’re the whole package. I love you.” He also said he loves the buckle on her shoes and her dress. I love you Steven T for noticing and loving shoe buckles.

Jennifer Lopez: “That was very good, I am so proud of you baby. That’s exactly what you have to do. That was a great vocal performance. That was beautiful.”

Randy Jackson: “Last week, I was a little worried, but what you just did right there, the Lauren we all grew to love, that we met the first time that we met you, America, Lauren is back in it to win in. That was hot. You know what was wrong with that performance? Absolutely nothing. That was amazing!”
Here is the video clip:

On her second song, Lauren channeled some Elvis by singing his Trouble…“I am evil, my middle name is misery.” Hard to imagine our sweet little Lauren singing those lyrics…

Video: James Durbin, I Won’t Ever Stop Believin’ In You!

On May 11, 2011’s American Idol, James Durbin sang Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ for his first song

The crowd went absolutely insane.

Steven Tyler said, “James, little indication of what is yet to come…You did it right. The song is kicking ass and so are you. Nice going.”

Jennifer Lopez:  “It’s nice to hear you go into your upper register. It’s amazing and not everybody can do that. Great job.”

Randy Jackson: “The was the highest level of difficulty, and you did it!”

Video: Haley Reinhart Screams Her Way Through MJ’s Earth Song And Then Leaves Us Speechless With Her Second Performance

For her first song on the May 11th American Idol, Haley Reinhart screamed her way through Michael Jackson‘s Earth Song and split the judges 2-1.

After I took out my earplugs, here is what I heard the judges say:

Jennifer Lopez: “I felt that song inspired you…Here’s where we are at the competition right now. James comes out and sets the bar. He does it with a great song and everyone is up on their feet. You have to think about that when you choose a song. That song has a beautiful message. No doubt. But I want you to be thinking about that when choosing a song: What everybody else is doing.”

Randy Jackson then pulled out his “Yo, listen!” phrase which he has barely used this season, so I knew it was gonna be bad news for Haley….”Yo, listen, just keeping it really real. Where we are at the competition is who wants to win this. Who is gonna take it home. The song does not suit you. I feel like you were screaming at the top of your range the same note at the end over and over again. My opinion is I didn’t like it. I felt like you were screaming.”

Steven Tyler interrupted: “Haley, don’t listen to them…They’re both wrong. That’s what you get from that. That song showed me that you can. You nailed it. You nailed the upper register. You pushed it to the top. The audience heard it. And America heard it. Don’t listen to them.”

Ya, Steven, I heard it. And I didn’t like it one bit. And I usually like Haley. How about you all? Did your ears hurt as much as mine or did I miss something? If you missed her performance, here is the video clip:

Instead of lying down and giving up, especially after Randy said Lauren, Scotty, and James had a three-way tie for first place tie after the first song, Haley came out angry and kicking but not screaming on her second song. And as she proved last week, when she sings angry she kicks ass.

Haley’s rendition of I Who Have Nothing by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller left me (and Casey Abrams in the studio audience) breathless. It was one of my favorite performances all season. THIS performance probably saved her from elimination this week. She should send a huge thank you basket of goodies for Lady Gaga for helping her bring out the theatrics in her performance.

Jennifer Lopez: “Look what you’re capable of. It was amazing. One of the best performances of the year.”
Randy Jackson: “Everybody needs a moment tonight. Baby you just had a moment right here that put you in it to win it. That was amazing. One of your best vocals ever.”
Steven Tyler: “I always knew it. It was a classic moment with classic Haley. You just Reinharted your way to middle of next week. That was beautiful.”
