Sure, Scotty McCreery was crowned the American Idol winner exactly a week ago, but can the 17-year old country singer actually accomplish what counts in the music industry: Sell his music post-Idol?
Now that initial results are in, we can confidently say, YES, YES, he sure can!
The crooner’s first single, I Love You This Big, debuted at No. 32 on Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based Hot Country Songs chart. THAT may not sound so impressive until you also take into account this little fact: NO new artist’s first single has debuted that high since Jan. 20, 1990. That span of time is almost four years older than Scotty himself. So, that’s a pretty impressive feat Scotty!
I should also mention that Scotty’s single reached #1 in its first week on the Country Digital Songs chart, making it the 300th #1 song on the Billboard charts by an Idol alumnus.
What’s Scotty’s take on his quick success? “I am humbled and shocked by this news! I can’t tell you what it means to me to be on the same charts as my musical heroes. I want to thank my fans and especially country radio for their support.”
As your fan, I will say, you are welcome, Scotty – THIS couldn’t have happened to a nicer fella!
SPOTTED: American Idol runner up, Lauren Alaina, was at The Grove in Los Angeles Thursday for an interview with Mario Lopez of Extra.
Lauren was there the morning after the finale. Mario asked Lauren what she whispered in Scotty’s ear before Ryan Seacrest announced the results. She said I asked him, “Are you ready to win? Cause you’re gonna win!” She also said the Idol process was a lot harder than she expected but it has prepared her for whatever lies in the future for her. For those of you wondering how her voice is, she said she is hoarse but other than sounding like a man for now, she’s doing great and will be fine.
I asked Lauren the big question on everyone’s mind: Is she dating Scotty McCreery? Here is her answer in this video:
Right after Scotty McCreery was crowned the American Idol winner, he sang his first single in front of a live audience at Nokia.
While the cameras rolled, he walked up to and hugged his fellow finalist, Lauren Alaina. And the whole world heard it: “I love you baby!” Yes, those were the words uttered by the 17-year old Idol to Lauren.
As the confetti kept falling, we think we also saw Lauren plan a kiss on Scotty.
After it was all over, Entertainment Tonightasked Lauren if the two of them were involved in a romance. She answered, “he might be my boyfriend … ask him.”
So, ET did ask and Scotty said he is “still single,” although he did admit that they have “gotten really close, but I don’t know about the more than friends stuff.”
I for one can tell you that I spotted the lovely duo having dinner together with their families at Cheesecake Factory right after the elimination results show narrowing the field down to three contestants. I think this is uber cute and hope it’s true!
UPDATE 5/26: I met Lauren today and asked her on camera if she is dating Scotty…here is her answer on video:
Watch the whole “I love you baby” and kiss from Idol finale unveil in Scotty’s rendition of I Love You This Big:
On Wednesday’sAmerican Idoland before Scotty McCreery was crowned season 12’s winner, he and Tim McGraw sang a duet together of Live Like You Were Dying. Scotty proved again that yes, he does in fact have what it takes to be a country super star!
After he was announced the winner, Scotty sang his first single, Love You This Big. As he sang, he walked into the crowd and hugged his mom, dad, sister and everyone else there in the audience to root on this incredibly poised and talented 17 year old.
Scotty then walked back on the stage and hugged all the other season 12 finalists and told co-finalist Lauren Alaina, “I love you baby!” SWEET!
Scotty ended the night like any shocked and thrilled Idol winner should: Trying to eat the confetti pieces falling from the ceiling..Congrats Scotty!
Here is the video of Ryan Seacrest announcing Scotty as the winner of Season 10 of American Idol:

The youngest American Idolmatch up took place Tuesday May 24 when 16-year old Lauren Alaina and 17-year old Scotty McCreerywent head-to-head for the Idol crown.
Scotty won the coin toss and like the gentleman that he is, he deferred to Lauren. Lauren chose to go second. So, Scotty opened the competition and sangGone to represent his favorite song of the season.

Scotty worked the crowd like a seasoned pro on his replay rendition of Gone, starting his performance in the aisle and high-fiving the audience as he walked towards the stage.

Someone give Scotty McCreery a contract already because this seasoned crooner is already way too ready to become a country singing superstar.
On Wednesday’s (5/18) American Idol, Scotty sang the life out of Lonestar’s Amazed as his first song of the night. And then he blew me away with his rendition of Kenny Rogers’ She Believes In Me. Scotty, I believe in you and you are making a country music lover out of me!
Here are the judges’ comments to his first performance:
Steven Tyler: “I just think you get better and better with your melody and your singing. I saw you get angry in the middle of that song, that’s what I have been waiting for. That’s really beautiful. You really did take that song up a notch.”
Jennifer Lopez: “It’s great to see you over the weeks…and how much you have grown. I’m sure there are a million girls out there wishing you were singing that song to them.”
Randy Jackson: “It was a great song choice for you. You know who you are and where your lane is. You put a period at the end of that song. You looked into that camera, that’s money!”
Watch Amazed for yourself:
For his second song, chosen by Jimmy Iovine, Scotty sang Thompson Square’s Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not? Tyler was all smiles! “I never heard you deliver a chorus like that before, you were singing those words, ‘are you gonna kiss me or not?’Beautiful, real character showing through.” Lopez said the performance was full of little moments that she loves so much and showed the audience the singer’s personality. She then asked him to shave his head next week so he can look the way he did in auditions. Jackson said, “It was really perfect, right in your range,” and then compared him to Garth Brooks. Jackson and Lopez called the second round for Scotty!
For his third song, he nailed one of my favorites, She Believes In Me by Kenny Rogers – the song chosen by the judges for him. Tyler said, “I do believe that’s the first big chorus you’ve sang,. You put it over the top for me. That was it right there.” Lopez said, “We chose that song because we all wanted to know if you could hit that big chorus, I guess you showed us!” Jackson agreed, “It’s about you stretching yourself at this point…seeing you believe you could hit those notes, you were so sweet and tender in the front. You hit the chorus. Very nicely done.”
Scotty McCreery rendered a beautiful, moving and pitch perfect performance of Alan Jackson’s Where Were You? on May 11th’s American Idol.
Listen, I am not a connoisseur of conutry music by any means, but I know a damn good heartfelt performance when I see and hear one, and Scotty, you killed it for me!
The Idol judges agree:
Randy Jackson: “Dude, I think it’s the perfect song choice for where we are as a country. I applaud you for that. You set your mark on this stage this season. You are ready for super stardom and I hope you make it.”
Steven Tyler: “That was beautiful. I ditto what Randy said. Passion…that’s really important. I see it in your eyes.”
Jennifer Lopez: “I’m just in love with you. I can’t help it. What you stand for, what you bring to your music. I can tell you know who you are. I can tell you know what touches other people. It’s the mark of someone who is meant to do this. And I’m glad we’re here to witness it.”
For his second song, he sang a more up-tempo fun song by The Coasters Young Blood. Tyler said it best, “You made Gaga’s yaya go lala. How could you do that?” HUH?
