Phillip Phillips did the impossible. After Jessica Sanchez blew our minds with her performance of Whitney Houston’s classic I Will Always Love You, Phillips more than held his own rocking out Dave Matthews style to Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.

Before Phillips took the stage, he blew away guest mentor Mary J. Blige and Jimmy Iovine in rehearsals. Iovine described Phillips as “that rare find of great musician and great singer,” adding that “he comes batteries included.”

After his performance, Randy Jackson gushed, “You’re probably the most different artist that we’ve had up there.” Adding, “I’m waiting to see every time how you’re going to reinterpret somebody’s song … Dude, you drive your own car in your own lane and I love it.”

Steven Tyler said, “You got a lotta ‘fuggedaboutit’ in your voice.”
