Zach BraffZach Braff is following in Veronica Mars’ footsteps. The actor has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his next film. The goal is to raise $2 million in the next 30 days to fund his movie, “Wish I Was Here.”  Braff’s fundraising efforts comes on the heels of the highly successful, fan-led campaign to fund a film based on the television series “Veronica Mars.” Fans of the show donated in droves, and shocked Hollywood by raising an astounding $5.7 million.

Braff has been eager to make another film since directing and writing the critically acclaimed “Garden State” in 2004. He says that finding financing for his film has been a major hurdle and is the main reason why he has not directed another movie. He admits that he was able to secure funding for “Wish I Was Here” but taking the money would have meant a loss of creative freedom, Braff would have to relinquish casting control and approval over the final edit of the film.

The success of the “Veronica Mars” campaign provided Braff with the inspiration he needed to turn to his fans for help with making the film a reality. In an interview on Tuesday he said, “I, like most of Hollywood, stared at the screen with my jaw dropped open, going: ‘Oh my God, it does work. As we were negotiating the deal, this ‘Veronica Mars’ story broke about what Rob Thomas had accomplished. That’s when my producers and I decided to stop talking about trying to wrap our heads around this deal, which didn’t seem very fair to us, and decide whether or not we were going to roll the dice and go for this. I have no idea if it will work. I’m saying to my fan base: ‘Hey, if you like the things I’ve done before, here’s a bunch of information about the next thing I want to do and I’d love you to be a part of it.”

In a video on his Kickstarter page, Braff pledges this approach enables him to produce “the truest representation of what I have in my brain.” He calls the film “a continuation of the tone” of “Garden State.” Braff will direct and star in “Wish I was here” as a struggling actor whose financial trouble leads him to home school his two children. Braff co-wrote the film with his brother Adam and hopes to begin production in August and have the film finished in time to submit it to the Sundance Film Festival. It’s been 9 years since Garden State and Braff is ready to start directing again, he says “I love it more than anything, making ‘Garden State’ was the most fun experience of my life.”
