It’s true – James Franco did not exactly kill it as an Oscar‘s host. But Oscar joke writer Bruce Vilanch opened up a can of whoop ass on Franco in New York magazine’s Vulture blog and Franco did not wait long to strike back via Twitter.
Vilanch told Vulture: “[Franco] has so many balls in the air, he didn’t get to town till Thursday before the show on Sunday…I don’t think he realized how big a deal it is to do it until he was actually confronted with it. I think he thought he would kind of … I don’t know what he thought.” As if that wasn’t a big enough stinger, Vilanch continued,”I have to call James Franco and tell him the show’s over. He doesn’t know. He took a nap and he woke up in class.”
Vilanch thought maybe Franco was putting on an act. He said, “I thought maybe it was a performance-art prank, and then I realized he sincerely wanted to do it. The only people who know how to host those shows are people who get up onstage every night and say, ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. A funny thing happened… ‘ Or people like Bette [Midler] who get up and sing all night and tell stories.”
Franco responded the only way celebs seem to respond these days, via Twitter! He sent a TwitPic of himself with Vilanch taken backstage at the Oscars. Except this wasn’t just any pic – it was one riddled with graffiti!
“James fucked up the Oscars. Trust me, I know comedy,” Franco wrote scribbled on the photo to indicate words coming from Vilanch. “I mean, come on, I write for Bette Midler!”
