Dancing With The Stars season 13 was back in full swing for its premiere September 19, 2011.
Here is a full show recap of each performance including judges’ comments and scores:
RON ARTEST AND PETA MURGATROYD
First up was LA Laker Ron Artest (or shall I say Metta World Peace) and pro newcomer Peta Murgatroyd doing the Cha Cha Cha.
Len Goodman was not impressed. He said it’s the same old shimmying about despite the new set and year. He called his footwork was atrocius. “All sizzle, no sausage”. Score: 4
Bruno Tonioli disagreed and said, “The dance-a-tron has landed with power and flair,” but did say Ron has to work on his technique. Score: 5
Cari Ann Inaba said Ron is the wild one and is eccentric and sexy. She liked the dance but said it was wrong for technical reasons. Score: 5

ROB KARDASHIAN AND CHERYL BURKE
Reality TV star Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke danced the Viennese Waltz as sisters Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney and bro in law Lamar Odom watched on. Kris and Bruce Jenner were also there. Rob said he is doing DWTS because he wants to come out from under his famous sisters’ shadow. He was a bit stiff on the dance floor, but his adorable factor made up for it. I look forward to his next routine.
Bruno said Rob looked petrified and he needs to relax. He also said he felt no musicality at all and needs to take control. Of course Khloe yelled something about wax between Bruno’s ears and that she felt the music. Score: 5
Carrie Ann said she saw potential when watching him dance and called him debonair– “You clean up nice”. Score: 6
Len said he’s not impressed, but he’s not depressed. He said Rob was too careful and thinking about all the instructions. He told him instead of worrying if he’s good or not, “Go out fighting, but just come out and dance!” Score: 5
Total score: 6+5+5 = Total: 16/30
KRISTIN CAVALLARI AND MARK BALLAS
Reality TV star Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas danced he Cha Cha Cha. “The bad girl from The Hills” Kristin introduced herself by saying, “I am not a bitch!” She definitely had more groove than her counterparts, but I still found her moves to be in slow motion.
Carrie Ann said she has the body to ballroom dance and said her “hairography” was working. She is excited to watch her dance and told her she shined. She told her to not shuffle her feet when standing alone. Score: 7
Len said it was lively, but that she went into her shell a bit when she was dancing live whereas she looked livelier in rehearsals. Score: 6
Bruno said he loves a bad girl with hot hips that can give hot action. He also said she has the full package to give the hot action. He said she has to work on the cleanliness and the precision because she’s already got the hotness. OK, we get it, Bruno thinks Kristin is hot. Score: 6
Total score: 7+6+6 = Total: 19/30
CHYNNA PHILLIPS AND TONY DOVOLANI
Singer Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani danced the Viennese Waltz next. Chynna of Wilson Philips and Billy Baldwin’s wife, had an easy time gliding on the dance floor and looked super relaxed.
Len said it wasn’t the best first dance he’s seen, but it’s close. “Well done.” Score: 7
Bruno said she looked like she was stepping out of a dream and into his heart. He said that she had musicality and she’s got the talent with the difficult steps. Score: 7
Carrie Ann said it was gorgeous and she is graceful. She found the choreography wonderful. She said it was perfection with the exception of a few nervous twitches. Score: 8
Total score: 8+7+7 = Total: 22/30
NANCY GRACE AND TRISTAN MACMANUS
Legal commentator Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus danced the Cha Cha Cha. Tristan is making his debut as a pro. Nancy is doing DWTS to show her twin three-year old daughters that she can dance. But on the dance floor, Nancy looked a bit like she was waiting for Tristan to direct her in her steps though she had more fun that I thought she would and was more graceful than I thought she’d be. What do I know?
Bruno Said she was lavishly gifted and said she has the moves. Said she is light on her feet and has the timing. Score: 6
Carrie Ann said she looked cute and looked like the happiest contestant out there. She said she has spunk and sass, but she has to work on remembering her choreography. Score: 5
Len said she was neat and precise, but lacked flair and attack. He was underwhelmed. Score: 5
Total score: 5+5+6 = Total: 16/30
DAVID ARQUETTE AND KYM JOHNSON
Actor David Arquette and Kym Johnson danced the Viennese Waltz. David has been sober for 8 months and is ready to use the sobriety to entertain DWTS fans. On the dance floor, David was clean shaven and looked the part for sure. He had good hold and posture and “got lost in the dance.” I am going to enjoy watching this couple each week and hope David infuses even more of his fun personality into future dances. It was nice to see Courteney Cox and daughter Coco in the audience cheering him on.
Carrie Ann said he had a beautiful vulnerability and endearing childlike quality. She really liked it and said he was gliding across the dance floor. Score: 6
Len said there was no superficial start and messing around and David came straight out into the dance. Len was very, very impressed and said David is a dancer. Score: 6
Bruno said he looked the part of the romantic lead and then he got all entangled in the “goddess”. He told him to stay on the scene of the dance. Score: 6
ELISABETTA CANALIS AND VAL CHMERKOVSKIY
Italian model and actress Elisabetta Canalis and Val Chmerkovskiy danced the Cha Cha Cha. Who knew Maks had an equally talented and hot brother? Best known here as George Clooney’s ex, the Italian Elisabetta is excited to be dancing on American TV but has some major communication issues with her Russian pro. Starting the dance in a bed, she looked somewhat disconnected and malnutritioned on the dance floor.
Len said he didn’t like the bed prop. About the dance, he said he didn’t mind it once they got going, but then it got brittle and weak. Score: 5
Bruno said he liked the bed and she was good in bed and looked good being handled by a man. He said she didn’t have the confidence once she was left to her own devices and that it all fell apart at that point. Score: 5
Carrie Ann said she fell apart when she was alone and needs to be stronger.
Total score: 5+5+5 = Total: 15/30
HOPE SOLO AND MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY
Olympic Gold medalist and World Cup star Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced the Viennese Waltz. She looked beautiful in her pink ballroom gown but lacked fluidity and seemed a bit too stiff.
Bruno said she has a bright future in front of her because she had great attack and musicality. She just needs more control in her lines. Score: 7
Carrie Ann said that the body contact and the hold were impressive and they were connected like glue. She said be aware of muscling. She liked her lines and called them gorgeous. Score: 7
Len said she had good hold and good posture, but she has to get more fluidity and femininity in her movement. Score: 7
Total score: 7+7+7 = Total: 21/30
CARSON KRESSLY AND ANNA TREBUNSKAYA
Fashion guru Carson Kressly and “fiery red-head Russian” Anna Trebunskaya danced the Cha Cha Cha. Carson was disappointed he did not get a male pro partner. Carson may not have been the most technically correct dancer of the night, but he certainly was entertaining and energetic especially when he moved like Jagger.
Carrie Ann said it was her favorite dance of the night and said he was something else. She could not get over all the sparkles. She said he wasn’t great technically but had the entertainment factor. Score: 6
Len said there were elements of Jagger, swagger and stagger. He said he was great entertainment and was fun and he came out and embraced the dance. Score: 5
Bruno said he created the flamboyant ballroom category and it was full out outrageous fun. Said the two dancers of Mick and Bianca were worth every dollar. Score: 6
Total score: 6+5+6 = Total: 17
JR MARTINEZ AND KARINA SMIRNOFF
Soap star and war veteran J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff danced the Viennese Waltz. JR’s story of surviving a landmine and his positive outlook on life are an inspiration.
Carrie Ann said that she was touched by his performance and he brought a genuine emotional quality to the dance. Score: 8
Len said that J.R. stands for “just right”. He said he was one of the best performances of the night and that he’d see him next week. Score: 7
Bruno said that he needs spit and polish in the lines. But agreed with Len that it was a top dance of the night. Score: 8
Total Score: 8+7+7 = Total: 22/30
RICKI LAKE AND DEREK HOUGH
Actress and daytime talk show host Ricki Lake and Derek Hough danced the Viennese Waltz. It was nice to see Derek back on the show afer taking last season off. Inspired by Kirstie Alley, Ricki is on the show to get her “slammin body” back at 42. She seemed extremely connected to the music and Derek on the dance floor. Do any of Derek’s partners perform badly, ever?
Bruno said there was great chemistry between the two and they seemed to enjoy every moment. Score: 7
Carrie Ann said she looked like a princess and Derek was her perfect prince and the two seemed to finish each other’s moves. She said it was like they were part of one person in fluidity. Score: 7
Len said he didn’t know what was going on with her feet, but called her elegant and said there was fluidity, she had lovely movement and he enjoyed it very much. Score: 6
Total score: 7+6+7 = Total: 20/30
CHAZ BONO AND LACEY SCHWIMMER
Dancing last were author and activist Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer, doing the Cha Cha Cha. I’ll admit, I had my reservations about Chaz being on this show, however, he quickly won me over with his charm and childlike qualities. I mean, how can I not root for a self-proclaimed overweight 40+ year old trying to learn how to dance?
Carrie Ann said people had been waiting all night to watch Chaz dance and he did not disappoint. She said he had so much joy and lit up the room. Score: 6
Len called him razzmatazz Chaz and said he enjoyed himself and had good footwork and great attitude. Score: 5
Bruno called him cheeky but so cuddly and cute. He said Chaz was joyous and it was a great debut and Chaz should be proud. Score: 6 Total scores: 6+5+6 = 17/30
