Jennifer Hudson experienced an extremely horrific event in 2008 when her mother, nephew and brother were shot to death in her mother’s house in Chicago.

The singer just revealed to Ebony magazine for the first time ever that she was supposed to be in the same house at the same time as the shootings.

Lucky for Hudson, right before the day of the shootings, her fiance, David Otunga, called her and asked her to fly to Florida instead of going to see her family in Chicago. “That’s one of the things that saved my life. Because I could have been home with my mom then,” Hudson explains.

The singer adds: “[David] wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago. I flew out to see him; that’s why I’m still here.” Hudson continues, I’ve never said that before, and I can’t believe I just said that now. But I didn’t know. He was just like, ‘I’m going to this wrestling thing, and it’s in Tampa. I’m going out there now, so you can come out there and see me versus going home.'”

Regarding the massacre of her family, the Oscar winner says the entire event remains a “surreal blur.” William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer’s sister, was charged with the murder of Hudson’s family. “For almost two weeks straight . . . [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out,” Hudson says. “I prayed when I’d get up in the morning and prayed before I laid down at night.”
