Children of the 90s rejoice! Disney Channel has announced that they will be updating the 90s classic “Boy Meets World.” The updated sequel of the show is tentatively titled, “Girl Meets World” and will center around Cory and Topanga- the couple is all grown up and raising their 13 year old daughter Riley and their 14 year old son Elliott (yes, I said 13 and 14 year olds- feeling old yet?)
Adult Cory has morphed into Mr. Feeny- he is now his daughter’s 7th grade history teacher. Riley will also have her own Shawn Hunter in the form of her best friend Maya. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have yet to sign on to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. Danielle Fishel has sent out some cryptic tweets in the past few days, hopefully that’s a good sign. Also, no official announcements have been made regarding if any of the other original cast members will be appearing in the new series. “Boy Meets World” originally aired as part of ABC’s TGIF line-up on ABC from 1993-2000.
“Girl Meets World” is the latest in a wave of 90s nostalgia. Nickeloden made headlines last year when the network brought back some of its classics in a late-night programming block. “The 90s Are All That” featured favorites such as “All That”, “Clarissa Explains it All” and “Double Dare”. The line-up was a ratings smash, and with classics like 90210 and Dallas making successful returns to TV, this could this mean a whole slew of our favorites could be coming back… “Full House” with grown up Stephanie and D.J., adult Steve Urkel and Laura Winslow in a “Family Matters” re-boot… the possibilities are endless and somewhat frightening (remember the short-lived return of Melrose Place). Rumor has it “Girl Meets world” has already begun casting, so stay tuned.
