NBC aired its Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together benefit telethon Friday night to raise money for victims of the natural disaster hitting most of the East Coast earlier this week.
The hour-long and commercial-free broadcast paraded a slew of celebrities donating their collaborative time for the effort. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Jon Bon Jovi, Mary J. Blige, Billy Joel and Christina Aguilera were among the many who helped raise donations for American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts.
Aguilera who hails from Staten Island, an area which was hit hard by Sandy, opened the show with her “I Am Beautiful.” Hosted by Jon Stewart and Matt Lauer, the likes of Jimmy Fallon, Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Kevin Bacon, and Danny DeVito took turns asking for donations.
New Jersey’s Jon Bon Jovi was shown visiting his devastated hometown of Sayreville before taking to stage to sing Who Says You Can’t Go Home? and Livin’ On a Prayer.
Billy Joel of Long Island fame and who is dealing with hurricane-related damage at several of his properties throughout the area performed Out on Broadway. He was followed by New Yorker Mary J. Blige who rendered a heartfelt version of The Living Proof. Aerosmith also sang Dream On and NY resident Sting performed Message in a Bottle.
The show was closed by Jersey Icon Springsteen and his E Streeters who mostly come from the Jersey Shore. The band performed My City of Ruins and Springsteen signed off with, “God bless the Jersey Shore”.
