Fox tried to build hype for the 12th season of American Idol by featuring a feud between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. And people did not tune it.
Fox can be as random as PartyBingo.com and at times it looks like Fox had forgotten what Idol is all about: The contestants.
But the second night of the Idol premiere got back to basics: Featuring one amazing story of Lazaro Arbos.
This 21-year old from Naples, Arbos has an extreme and un-explainable case of speech stutter, making it nearly impossible for him to complete a sentence. The stutter began at age six and worsened when Lazaro moved to the U.S. with his family at 10. He was born in Cuba.
Arbos started singing as a young child with the encouragement of his mother as a way to help him communicate. His stutter remains a problem; the judges at American Idol had to help him when he told them the name of his song.
“We don’t know where my stuttering came from it is something that goes on and no one really knows why.” Lazaro said.”No one wanted to hang out with me at school and I had no friends to go out with so I would be home. Since I was small I have always wanted to sing.”
Because of his speech impediment, Lazaro admitted that he has no friends. But what he lacks in friendships, he makes up for in his musical and signing ability. All four judges had high praise for the 21-year old. “It’s amazing that the stammer doesn’t happen when you sing,” Randy Jackson told him. Keith Urban suggested the contestant “just sing all the time.” Mariah Carey called his performance “beautiful,” and Nicki Minaj said she found Arbos “very, very inspiring.”
