NBC has hired another Saturday Night Live alum to take Jimmy Fallon’s soon to be
vacant Late Night chair. Next year, when Fallon replaces Jay Leno as host of The
Tonight Show, Seth Meyers will take over Fallon’s duties of as host of Late Night.
NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed the hiring and said, “We think
Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his
generation. His years at SNL’s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise.”
Veteran SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels will also be the executive producer
of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” Earlier this year, Michaels was also named executive
producer of “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.
No premiere dates for Fallon’s or Meyer’s shows have been announced, but NBC
has said Leno’s exit and Fallon’s debut will coincide with the network’s 2014 Winter
Olympics coverage. Meyers will likely continue his duties on SNL until then; he is
SNL’s head writer and is currently in his 12th season with the show. Fallon left SNL in
2004 and replaced Conan O’Brien as host of Late Night in 2009.
Currently, SNL and Late Night both broadcast from NBC’s New York headquarters at 30
Rockefeller Plaza. NBC announced in April that The Tonight Show would relocate from
Burbank, California to join the SNL and Late Night at 30 Rock.
Meyer’s hiring is a bright spot for the network and comes of the heels of a slew of firings
at NBC this week. The struggling network cancelled six shows in 24 hours. Whitney,
Guys With Kids, 1600 Penn, Go On, The New Normal and Up All Night all got the axe
this week.
